Spring is arid with occasional sand storms from the Gobi desert. It's so dry that fleece wearers trigger static discharges. Summers temperatures average over 30°C (86°F) with occasional surges upto 40°C(104°F). Summer also has the highest rainfall (relative to the arid average) with occasional thunderstorms. Autumn is pleasant in Beijing with clear skies and light breezes. Winters hover around 0°C (32°F) with evenings often colder. Winds can be harsh.
Despite the cold winters, Beijing is not at a very northerly latitude, there are about 8 daylight hours during the winter solstice.
