Five working days in a week is the official government regulation.So people in Beijing work eight hours a day and five days a week.They also enjoy ten-day official holidays in a whole year(so far ):one day for New Year's Day (January 1);three days for the Chinese New Year,the Spring Festival(the first three days in the first lunar month);three days for the International Labor Day(May 1);and three days for the National Day(Oct.1)
All the students and teachers in the school have winter vacation for one month and summer vacation for about two months.While the civil servants and people working in most of the enterprises also enjoy their vacations or holidays according to their working age or the length of their service.
There are also six single-day holidays. If the holiday falls on a weekend, a Monday or Friday will be a holiday. If the holiday falls mid-week, there will be three consecutive days off during the week and Saturday and Sunday will be work days. These holidays are:
- 1st January (New Year's Day)
- Qing Ming* (Clear and Bright Festival or Hung Ghost's Festival)
- 1st May (International Workers's Day)
- Duan Wu Jie* (Dragon Boat or Rice Dumpling Festival)
- Zhong Qiu Jie* (Mid-Autumn Festival or Moon Cake Festival)
