Ice-hockey, rugby and football all have competitive social leagues in the city. Teams also tour in the region. There are mountains 1-2 hour's drive away (at non-peak hours) with hikes, and rock climbing for the more adventurous. Bikers, triatheletes and adventure racers (novices and pros alike) should get in touch with the Mobsters for an update on the latest events.
There are a number of golf courses outside the city. Memberships are pricey but most allow non-member visitors to play. Green fees start from about RMB1,000 a round. Yes, there's skiing in Beijing's mountains, but areas are small and snow is man-made. Good for beginners, or to practice your turns before a ski holiday. If possible, avoid weekends and public holidays as the slopes get very crowded.
