Here's what to plan for when you move out of your Beijing home. Create a to-do list and stick it on your fridge. Here's what to consider:

Housing

  • Let us know when you'll be leaving your home so we can schedule a handover with your landlord.
  • List out any damages in an email to us so we can schedule repairs in advance.
  • If you're giving prior notice to your landlord, do it officially on paper and in writing and use a courier service. If the lease is signed by your company, make sure it's stamped and on their letter head.
  • For an easy handover, make sure you have all keys, access cards, utility cards, instruction manuals, passwords (ADSL & safe) and remote controls. Anything missing? Let us know in advance.
  • Remove all rubbish and clean. If you'd like to book a cleaning company, let us know.

Advanced notification for movers

The landlord needs to notify the property management for them to allow your movers to move out your personal goods. Let us know a week in advance so we can get the landlord to do this.

Kids

  • Notify the school and kindergarten, and transcripts.
  • Prepare for farewells.

Medical

Get copies of your kids' and your own medical and vaccination records

Movers

  • Get a quote from several movers at least 4 weeks before moving day.
  • When they come to pack your goods, make sure you put aside all items belonging to the Landlord that will not be packed. This could be keys, remotes, access cards or instruction manuals. Movers normally have stickers that you can stick on the furniture that is not to be moved.

Pets

Consult a specialist pet transporter to learn about the vaccinations and procedures required to move your pet home.

Telephones & Internet

The delayed telephone billing cycle means your landlord may want to withhold repaying the security deposit till after your last bill has been paid. So consider stopping outgoing call services (or just international calls) 1 month prior to moving out.

Otherwise, leave a small sum with your secretary or a friend. We help you with account transfers and cancellations. If the landlord paid for installation, transfer the account to his name. Otherwise, cancel the service on departure.

Car

  • Give at least 1 months' notice to your driver or car leasing company.
  • Write a recommendation letter for your driver and post an ad for him on expat notice boards and forums. Tell us about him too as we may be able to introduce him to a new employer.

Ayi

  • Give at least 1 months' notice to your Ayi.
  • Write a recommendation letter for your Ayi and post an ad for her on expat notice boards and forums. Tell us about her too as we may be able to introduce him to a new employer.

Mail

  • Give your new address to your bank, stockbroker, insurance, tax authority and any magazines you subscribe to.
  • Arrange for mail to be forwarded to your new address.

Sell or Donate

Any thing you don't need? Save on moving or storage costs. Have a garage sale or donate it to charity.
